i heart brooklyn

what's up? im sitting now in the Perch Cafe in brooklyn killing time (my fav pasttime) and sitting outside enjoying the first day of fall.

i've just discovered that the NYC Dept. of Sanitation has an artist in residence - Mierle Laderman Ukeles. Amazing. she does work with the Fresh Kills Landfill - the highest manmade hill in the world (you can see all our garbage from space!), among other things & has since the 70s. crazy artists - i love you.

i've been in NY all week for the IFP Market - a film festival for work-in-progress films - mostly documentaries. I saw lots of great stuff, and of course some not so great. met good people & generally schmoozed, something i'm not so great at but am working on.
overall, NYC's been full of shopping:

::Kid Robot - Chappies & Smorkin Labbits (right)
::Brookyln Industries - a black & purple velvety coat i want but doesn't fit
::Ben Sherman - A black funnel neck peacoat i want but doesnt fit
... p.s. - why am I - a mostly normal sized girl - too big for even the XL coats at the cute designers shops? hello - designers! I have (some) money to burn! why aren't you letting me?!
::cheese & beer heaven called Bierkraft - they fed me a delicious sandwich and I could have stayed there all day.
::endless boutiques

next on my list is records... and i'm always hunting for that mysterious new/old album that i know i want when i see it but just don't know what it is. feh.

so... what's up with you?

Gloomy

could it be any gloomier outside? I present you with animated Gloomy Bear attacking a small child to counteract.

I keep expecting this site to have new things for me, but sadly, the internet doesn't randomly create content & presenting new things is my job.

*sigh*

feh.

dave's just written an meloncholy entry on the end of summer and I for one am not ready to let it go. i mean, we've still got 9 whole days! I will fight to the last the 60 degree overcast days that make me have to wear sweaters in the office with slacking & do-nothingness. and maybe less being in the office. more playing outside. (blowing off work to do the) Billy Goat Trail anyone?

Seriously. 9 days is a little sad, but I plan to kick it out with a week in Brooklyn, even if it is for work.

And at least people don't look at me so crazily for knitting in the fall (as opposed to on the metro on sweltering days)

we made a movie!

check out Dave's blog - for photos of the movie we were shooting last weekend. Then, see you on Sept 28th in Richmond at FLICKER'S Attack of the 50' Reels screening. we all look hot & have on excessive make up.

HAIRSPRAY

Christ almighty.

The good news is that I can see HAIRSPRAY in the theaters again. The bad news is that John Travolta looks terrible in drag. they couldn't do any sfx to fix his hugungus man-hands?! They didn't want to max out the make-up to? He just looks like a mannish mom, not the over the top drag queen that Divine & Harvey Firestein played. Mannish moms are not as fun as queens.

I hope Travolta doesn't ruin it. But the cast looks good, with Christopher Walken playing the dad and Queen Latifah as Motormouth Maybelle. Sadly, USA Today is the only one with the sense to use this amazing photo in their article. everyone else chose to show him looking "distinguished." Pssht! Let's not forget he's a scientologist.

glorious summer

I became obsessed with the idea of my grandmother's peach icecream. I made my mom dig up the recipe, and the hand-crank icecream maker. Below, my documentation of the making-of in the lazy middle of the week at the beach.

1. find hand-written recipe in ancient cook book. peel apart & type for archival
purposes.

2. convince someone else to find you that hand-crank maker and a mental image of your ancient grandfather bent awkwardly over it using all available muscle to churn it for an army of impatiently waiting kids.

4. make peach soup.

5. marry peach soup to the maker.

6. add ice.

7. grind endlessly

8. it's all worth it for the creamy goodness.

9. scoop.

10. devour.

11. rest.

12. repeat.

Swap a success!

Thanks to everyone who came out & dontated & took things from the swap! Even to that couple who wordlessly dropped a granny cart full of books & yarn! (You're not even going to look?!)

We raised more than $100 for Transformer Gallery & I think everyone that came in took home something good/ridiculous. Thanks to the chick who brought me new pink dickies scrubs & to E-faux for bringing a fuzzy bear jacket.

Viva free stuff!!
