commute as art

I blogged for Filmmaker Magazine about the dazzling animation in the tunnel after the B/Q DeKalb stop here in Brooklyn. Masstransiscope (1980) is by my former Hampshire film professor Bill Brand, restored after 20 years of negligence. Actually, I'd been riding past it nearly daily since I moved here, but they only turned the lights on the show a few months ago. The short article is mostly factual, and upon reflection, I feel like I've neglected to mention how nice it is to have art on your commute. It's easy enough to miss with your head in a book, your headphones on and spacing out into your own world, but once you notice that there's something to capture your attention out there in that dark tunnel, it's hard to ignore it when you go past. Your fellow commuters wonder what you're craning your neck at, and most feign disinterest when they see it too. But many, like these folks, get caught up in the joy of having something unexpected like this in the otherwise bland subway. Art in public places can be tricky. it can be ugly or creepy, and people can disagree about whether it's art or not (I'm looking at you, graffiti). I think this one falls into the category of art to enhance ones surroundings.

after seeing a haunted-feeling apartment - a rundown brownstone with dry thorny roses by the lion-guarded white metal fence, a private yard, 'garden entrance' and an okay price, dirty and badly maintained, with a rat problem and a cold wind blowing into the place up from the basement,...
i was convinced to put our money where my thoughts were and go for the warm, west-facing 5th floor two (large) room flat with a regular size kitchen and bathroom with a tub, fire escape and room for the bikes, the bar & the cat, a few blocks from the express trains and the park, with amenities like laundry in building, an elevator, and a thriving multicultural neighborhood. it's nearly twice what the falling apartment is, but for the location (significantly closer to work than falling apartment), and the style, i think im in. d is too, by default, and i hope he's as excited as me about seeing zira bark at obese pigeons on the fire escape where our tomatoes & herbs will grow, looking out onto mimosa trees and 'south prospect park' or 'lefferts gardens' or 'flatbush' or whatever you want to call it in the morning, putting the Love Mr Egg painting above the bed, filling the three closets with all our things, and putting the toys on the built-in shelf in the foyer.

after the unreasonably stressful application process i cleared my head with a scallion cream cheese+tomato+cucumber on an everything bagel, a few phone calls, and a very long walk from the realty office to my temporary home.

two to three lists on new york city

You have to admit that there is something about living in a city like New York that makes you think that you're some kind of loner/artist/writer/poet/ wanderer/freethinker/sociologist/ coffee/whisky-drinking / smoking/beatnik-hippie-punk that makes for endless diary writing awaiting tempura maki and hijiki salad (alone at a table for two, naturally), on the train to wherever you are going, or drinking vodka at a friends bar, there is something about cities like this that makes it happen.

althou, there isn't much of the privileged artsyness that goes with sushi and a comfortable solitude in Chinatown, where i sat writing yesterday at dusk, or in Bushwick where i type now (essentially alone, thou my roommate is plugged into whatever obsessive game hes been doing since i left the apartment on saturday).

Mostly, these places are filled with poverty, although Chinatown is also filled with seemingly endless stalls of strange dried things, questionable fish, even worse durian in yellow mesh bags, cheap vegetables (not organic & with a carbon footprint of >500mi), knock-off purses, watches, belts, dvds, &anything else that can be ripped off, and the holy home of vegetarian drumsicks (along with something called vegetarian fish ham, which, for the record, im not the slightest bit interested in eating).

in addition to trying not to open the bag of drumsticks and sort of wishing we had a deep fryer, here's a list of things i expect i will not be doing in my last four days here:

- visit the Whitney / Kara Walker solo exhibition
- visit the Met who were bold/moneyed enough to install Hirst's The Physical Impossibility of Death in the Mind of Someone Living which includes an updated shark from the original display in Saatchi's BMA "Sensation" show
- visit the Guggenheim, more for the art cred of having gone. the facade is under renovation/scaffold anyway
-see a film at BAMcinematek, Film Forum, or some other ultra indie or notedly cinephelic theater. In fact, the only film i saw that is likely not available in DC was Wristcutters: A Love Story, at Times fucking Square.
-visit all 5 boroughs. Sorry Bronx and Staten.
-burlesque, strip club, peep show, or something equally old-new-york seedy
-find the international spice market or that huge greenmarket you see on TV cooking shows where tv chefs buy their groceries
-close a bar at 4am.
-walk across brooklyn, williamsburg or manhattan bridge
-find a magically beautiful and cheap bicycle to coast around brooklyn
-make it big time as a Broadway dancer (the stagehands are on strike)

the best thing i've eaten this week (so far)

Rickshaw Dumpling's Chocolate Shanghai Soup Dumpling.
Mochi stuffed with liquidy chocolate rolled in black sesame and fried. hot, sweet, chewy, delicious.

Close 2nd: Juliana's veggie tomato sauce. fresh and savory. thanks!

one breath away from mother oceania

hi! missed you at Bjork last night. an amazing show. she was wearing some ridiculous-amazing gold lame ruffley-flouncey dress and silver tights, barefoot, with the Icelandic Wonderbrass band, giant towers of fire, confetti and streamers, lasers and smoke machines. Her voice gives me goosebumps and has more emotion and joy than one usually encounters. She sang hyper-ballad, pagan poetry, cover me, i miss you, oceania and new stuff I haven't memorized yet. Our seats were mediocre, but we could see and hear.

Mariachi Band on Subway

Ok, not a Mariachi band, since no brass section or Guitarron, but maybe a NorteƱo band. Matching black outfits & brown leather belts (lizard? croc?). 11am Friday. Manhattan-bound L train. Played half a song, made at least $15 on my car.

Art Parade

dsmooth pointed me to the Dietch Projects' Art Parade Saturday. went down with cee-rock and saw a lot of mayhem, nudity and amazing big-body costumes. These are from crappy cell phone, stand by for photoblaster & maybe a video of a half-dozen girls with hair braided all together. there were assorted marching bands (including Malcom X High), accordion and uke bands (why are these the instruments of artists?), Heartschallenger were there with Songs For Ice Cream Trucks giving out popsicles.

We Eat Brooklyn

Saturday we walked and ate and drank all day. Woke up leisurely, got coffee at my daily stop The Wyckoff Starr and walked thru Bushwick down Knickerbocker to the M train. It's like a foreign country there - cheap stores & lots of fancy sneakers, everyone speaks Spanish and there are old men selling snow-cones with real scraped ice and real pina syrup. (snow cones are on the list for next weekend's eating). The M train is above ground, so we took the scenic route across the Williamsburg Bridge and into Chinatown.

Destination: The Donut Plant.

Have you ever eaten a donut before? maybe not until you've had one of these monsters. they are so good, and written up in nearly every foodie mag. A white peach-iced donut alone might be worth a trip to NY. Dave was in bliss with a tres leches cake donut. Nearly $20 also got us blueberry jelly, peanut butter+jelly, coconut creme, valrhona chocolate, a coffee and a damn good iced chai. also a serious sugar buzz.

Walked it off in Chinatown, hunting for the elusive Indian Mango (it remains elusive), and decided to head to the shadier (with trees) Park Slope. Indulged in window shopping and shoe-trying-on and made our way over to Biercraft. Made out like bandits with 4 kinds of beer, including a growler of Chelsea Sunset Red which we finished with a munster + yellow tomato sandwich on chewy bread and Zapp's honey bbq chips back at my place. Whew! time for a nap!

Feeling refreshed, D+I met Corey, a photographer, and Juliana, a for more beer in Williamsburg at divey Cyn. Polished off the evening with late night slices from Vinnie's Pizza, owned by Hampshire alums, and experts on deluxe pies - black bean avacado; vegan sausage + BBQ sauce; avacado nacho slices and fresh mozz-tomato-basil. yes please!

yum. im full just reminicing.

new york

feh. it's overcast & meloncholy out. i've finally moved into the troutman ave place & the room within where i'll be staying. it does have a window, one up on the other rooms in the apartment. It looks onto a parking lot and the apts next door. i need a proper curtain & a dresser & to get organized & not be meloncholy. im still mostly in flux, i don't have a desk a computer or an email at my new job. ive just realized that I forgot to pay a bill, i have bellyache (off yogurt?) and all other other things that pile up and make even normal days seem low. i shouldn't bitch, i suppose, there's lots of good folks here that i like, and now i have to choose my plan for tomorrow between seeing SUPERBAD and going to a SXSW/IFC film premiere - free drinks and socializing with potential employers/'industry peers'? or getting rowdy with friends and seeing a funny movie/escapism?
